So, no, Lt. Col. John Montgomery was never given the military title of full Colonel.
He used it, by mistake, and was censored for it.
Tennessee still recognizes this John Montgomery as Colonel, but that would be of another story.
Spouse of this Lt. Col. John Montgomery was Phoebe.
IN 1795, Phoebe Montgomery, Widow of Lt. Col. John Montgomery was selling off the lands that her husband had owned on Red River and Whipporwill Creek.
The children that John and Phoebe had together where named:
William, Joseph, Margaret and Elizabeth.
1799, Phoebe Montgomery and William Montgomery were Taxed in the newly formed Montgomery County, Tennessee.
This John Montgomery had been killed during an ambush in November 1794. William Montgomery, eldest son, went out with many others to find and bury the remains the next day.
The parentage of this Lt. Col. John Montgomery has been considered for many years to be William and Margaret Brily Montgomery. This William Montgomery having been Constable on Reed Creek in 1765, and was enumerated in this same area in 1756, with John Montgomery, James Montgomery and Thomas Montgomery. So, buyer beware, when you read about this family in the books and some of what has been entered on-line.
