Interesting stuff from Ayrshire, Scotland
From an old book called the History of the County of Ayr with a Genealogical Account of the Families of Ayrshire by James Patterson Vol. II publ. in Edinburgh in 1852 and Sold by John DICK, Bookseller in Ayrshire (Wow! poss. relation to our Ydna Alexander MUDIE/Moody's wife Priscilla DICK's family?)
comes the following tid bits of info -
Under the CRAWFURD/Crawford name and their associates -
William FAIRLIE married twice, first to Miss Catherine Brisbane daughter of Thomas and second to Elizabeth CRAUFURD second daug. of John CRAUFURD of CRAUFURDLAND by whom he had no issue.
She survived him more than 26 years during which time she enjoyed a jointure off the estate. She married John HOWIESON of Braedhead in the county of Edinburgh to whom she had two sons who died in infancy and a daughter who died unmarried, and a daughter Elizabeth HOWIESON who married the Rev. James MOODY minister in Perth by whom she had a son William Howieson CRAUFURD (interesting that he didn't have the MOODY last name of his father),and a daughter Isabella.Mrs. MOODIE (now spelled that way even though above the MOODY name was spelled that way??), died in April 1823. Her mother the dowager of Fairlie died in 1802 at the very advanced age of 97.
Another entry~(this is all in Ayrshire, Scotland on the west coast not too far from the Nor. Ireland borders)
In April 1650 the Presbytery finding that the sin of witchcraft was growing daily and that in the several parishes .....there was a Privy Council and hearing the Presbytery do judge the confessions of the persons following relevant to be recommended ....The confessions of Janet ROBINSON of Monkcastle, Sarah ERSKINE of Largs, John SHEDDEN same, Margaret MONTGOMERIE of Irvine, Jean HAMILTON, Marion CUNNINGHAME and Euphame DICKIE same place, Janet McKIE of Dalry, Catherine ROBISON (Not RobiNson), Agnes GLEN, Bessie EWING and VIOLET MUDIE in Kilbride all of which did confess before famous witnesses and the renouncing of their baptisms...etc. Their confessions were all heard in Co. Ayr, Scotland.
Later in the book there is this information..
Elizabeth HOWISON of Braedhead who was married in 1777 to the Rev. JOHN MOODIE one of the ministers at Perth who jure uzoris became Laird of Braedhead to whom she had several children as already noticed Dying in April 1823.
So did she marry Rev. James or Rev. John MOODIE?? The book can't even keep the info straight.?? (some of this text is really small and very hard to read, but I can clearly make out that the first entry said she married Rev. James and then it says she married Rev. John MOODIE)
Lots of info in here on the KENNEDY's of Dunure etc. and their link to Cassillis.
In the Appendix there is this info:
John CUNINGHAM of Broomhill and other lands and of the Geise in CAITHNESS where he was Admiral Depute in 1630, he married 1st to Jean LESLIE and had 3 daughter. He married 2nd Elizabeth SINCLAIR of Ratter a cadet of the Earl of CAITHNESS by whom he had 5 sons and 4 daughters.(wonder if any of those LESLIE's link to our Ydna Moody line of Co. Antrim, Nor. Ire.?)
John and Jean had Sir John, Adam, Janet, Anne, James, Alexander, George, Isabel who married Alexander SINCLAIR of Tellstone and Mary who m. John STEWART.
Sir William CUNINGHAM second Baronet of Caprington, married Janet only child and heiress of Sir James DICK of Prestonfield, Baronet whose patent of Baronetcy in 1707 limits it to those of the Cuninghames of Caprington who were his heirs of entail. By her Sir William had 6 sons and 4 daughters. Sir John his heir, James, Sir William, and Sir Alexander CUNINGHAM.
Sir John CUNINGHAM, third Baronet of CAprington, m. Lady Elizabeth MONTGOMERIE eldest daug. of Alexander ninth Earl of Eglintoun by Susanna daughter of Sir Archibald KENNEDY, Baronet of Culzean and by whom he had 2 sons...Sir William his heir and Alexander Montgomerie CUNINGHAME who died unmarried.
Sir William CUNINGHAM (from above heir of Sir John) married Mary SWINDELL relict of CApt. John GRAEME and died in 1829 without issue.
The Baronetcy devolved upon his cousin german, Sir Robert Keith DICK, BAronet of Prestonfield who by an Acot of Parliament 8 and 9 Victoria, Capt. 23 was enabled to take the surname of CUNINGHAME along with DICK which otherwise he could not have done through the entrail of Prestonfield by which alone he held that estate.
The direct senior representation of the family of CUNINGHAME of Lambruchton and CAprington as well as of DICK of Prestonfield with the estate of Caprinton then descended to the heirs of line of Alexadner CUNINGHAME younger son of Sir William Cuninghame second Baronet of Caprington by his wife Dame Janet DICK only child and heiress of Sir James DICK, first Baronet of Prestonfield. This Alexander CUNINGHAME afterwards Sir Alexander DICK third Baronet of Prestonfield and holder of that title and estate in virtue of the Prestonfield patent and entrail left issue of three sons and 5 daughters - Sir William DICK, Sir John DICK, Sir Robert Keith DICK, Janet DICK, Anne DICK, Elizabeth DICK who m. Robert LINDSAY, Mary who married Alexander PRINGLE and Margaret Alexander DICK who m. James STARK, Esq. of Kingsdale.
Sir William DICK fourth Baronet of Prestonfield married Dame Joanna DOUGLAS of Garvaldfoot and left issue of one son and four daughters
Sir Alexander, Mary who married the Rev. David WAUCHOPE, Anne DICK, Agnes Joanna DICK who married Alexander PRINGLE, Esq. (wonder if this is a Different one than the above Mary who also married to an Alexander Pringle?), Elizabeth Douglas Trotter DICK who married to Maj. Gen. Sir Duncan M'GREGER.
Their Seat was a Caprington Castle in Ayrshire, Scotland.
These old books are worded so oddly compared to how we speak today, and there are so many run-on sentences that by the time you get to the end of one, you have completely lost your place as to who's who.
I looked in the IGI records for a Violet MUDIE christened Mar. 25, 1722 and only found one born nearly 100 yrs. later to an Alexander MUDIE and Elizabeth DAVY in Montrose, Angus, Scotland.
Don't know if there was a connection or not but the name "Violet" is very rare among the Moody(of any spelling) families.
That's all for now, hope I didn't make too many typo's, I typed this quickly.
