Cashel, Co. L'derry, Ire - MOODY's - Gage-Caskey etc...
Posted by: melissa1 (ID *****1156) Date: July 06, 2011 at 11:24:02
  of 11595

From some wills from PRONI (public records office in Nor. Ireland), comes the following details which I found very interesting and I believe shows the relationship clearly between our Ydna MOODY's and this Thomas MOODY who m. Mary GAGE line of Cashel (also seen spelled as Cashell).

The will of Thomas MOODY (b.c1808...my best guess) of Cashel, Co. L'derry, who was a farmer, died on Jan. 29, 1879. The date of his will was Oct. 11, 1877. His wife was Mary GAGE. Named in his will were the following people...
son Matthew MOODY
son Thomas MOODY
son John MOODY
daug. Martha MOODY
son Hugh Gage MOODY
daug. Margaret Jane (nee Moody) REID
daug. Mary MOODY (who married into the GAGE family)
and Andrew GAGE (son-in-law...no doubt Mary's husband above and named a son Thomas GAGE.
Appointed executors of his will were his son John MOODY of Camm, Co. L'derry and Andrew GAGE of Culdrum of Co. L'derry, both listed as farmers.
Witnesses to his will were John McPHERSON and Samuel McCURDY.
[NOTE - it was the son Matthew MOODY above who married Letitia CASKEY (thanks to Louise for finding this info and documenting it for us), and they named a daughter Elizabeth McCURDY MOODY...perhaps the McCurdy's were part of the extended family too...also NOTE that son Hugh Gage MOODY married Rebecca Ann CASKEY and her will was dated March 16, 1897...Rebecca died Sept. 16, 1898).

From the Will of Rebecca Ann (nee CASKEY) MOODY wife of Hugh Gage MOODY son of Thomas Moody and Mary Gage.
Her will as I mentioned above was dated March 16, 1897 and she died Sept. 16, 1898. Rebecca was listed as being a "widow" in her will and of Fernleister (spelling?), however another notation says she was of Rushtown, Co. L'derry, perhaps they are both one and the same area.
Her will is very short and in it she names:
daug. Hannah MOODY
son Hugh MOODY
son Thomas MOODY and she appoints as her executors -
Matthew MOODY of Cashel and Samuel FINLAY of Kilts(??) both in Co. L'derry and her will is witnessed by a W. J. SMITH, Sol (solicitor??) of Coleraine and Thomas MOODY, student of Cashel (her son?).

If you go to Rootsweb and search for Hugh Gage MOODY you will find a person's genealogy listed there who goes by the number "15138" aka "Taglet". The genealogy is old its been posted there for some time No updates etc. since 2001.
The earliest MOODY she links back to is that of a Henry MOODY. In the notes she staes the old "3 brothers" story, saying that they came over from Scotland, one went to Castle Rock, one to Limavady and one in Cashel.
Spouse of Henry Moody is unknown but they had 3 sons...
Thomas, James and Andrew MOODY.
My question is, does this son Andrew link to the Anne CHANCELLOR line who had the son Rev. James Renwick MOODY??
If so, we may have yet another link we can add to this chain.
Son Thomas MOODY I guesstimate to have been born around c1808 based on the births of his sons and backing this up to his father Henry, I guess that Henry was born around c1780 perhaps in Scotland.
Thomas MOODY b.c1808 who lived in Cashel, Co. L'derry, Nor. Ireland married Mary GAGE and they had at least 7 children that we saw mentioned above in Thomas' will.
From "Taglet's" genealogy at Rootsweb we see that this nearly coincides with the info from the will.
She lists that Margaret Jane REID married Robert McClelland REID (interesting middle name of McClelland since I found another Moody whom I suspect links to these as well who married a gal whose last name was CLELAND...prob. a form of or misspelling of McClelland).
Son Matthew MOODY mentioned in his father Thomas' will who married Leticia CASKEY (Taglet has her last name listed as CarLey but she probably couldn't legibly make out the surname of CasKey so its easy to see how this error was made if you are not familiar with the surname).
She gives the names of their children as:
Maggie, Mary, Martha, Thomas who married an Elizabeth LOVE.
Son John MOODY (of Thomas and Mary Gage MOODY) who was also mentioned in his father's will and lived in CAMM, Co. L'derry married Martha MORRISON in Killaig, Nor. Ire. Her father is listed as a William Morrison.
They had children:
Hugh Gage MOODY b. 1871 who later became a Presbyt. minister who married Florence SLOAN and they came to PA.
Thomas MOODY b. 1862who d. of tuberculosis
Mary Ann MOODY b. 1864 (married a Thomas McNEILL)
William Moody b. 1866 (married a Sarah FINLAY...NOTE Samuel FINLAY (spelled same way...was one of the Executors of a will above).
John Moody (married an Elizabeth KENNEDY and apparently this John Moody died at a fairly young age...no children are listed for this couple so its likely that his widow Elizabeth (Kennedy) MOODY re-married).
Sarah Moody
Samuel MOODY (who also became a Presbyter. minister and followed his brother Hugh to PA. Samuel married a woman named Savillia REARICK)
and James MOODY b.1876 (James may have died young too).
This family apparently owned a lot of land in the area, several hundred acres are mentioned in the Macosquin and Camm areas.

Just to show you the relationship between the MOODY's and CASKEY's...
One of our proven Ydna families, that of the Lenamore/Magilligan, Co. L'derry, area...Alexander MOODY (Mudie) who married Priscilla DICK, their son Israel MOODY married Elizabeth CASKEY (daug. of Andrew CASKEY who was from someplace around Limavady, Co. L'derry).
Israel and Elizabeth and their large family lived in Aghanloo, Co. L'derry before immigrating to Kings Co., Nova Scotia, Canada sometime after Jan. 1841 (when they landed in NY harbor on the ship "Europe" captained by Timothy Batchelor).

Thomas MOODY above who married Mary GAGE, two of their sons...Matthew and Hugh Gage MOODY both married CASKEY gals. Matthew married Letitia (Leticia) CASKEY and Hugh Gage MOODY married Rebecca Ann CASKEY.
I am in the process now of trying to find out who their father's were, but its entirely possible they are all related to one another and that this is a case of Moody relatives marrying into Caskey relatives.
There is also a letter of Admin. from the estate of a James CASKEY of Camm, Co. L'derry a farmer who died Jan. 25, 1883 and he mentions a son William CASKEY of Camm a farmer a son James and 3 daughters whose names are not given and his wife whose name is not given either. One of the witnesses to his will was Matthew MOODY.
James Caskey's will was dated Jan. 16, 1883 and he died on Jan 25, 1883. This James CASKEY could possibly be the Father or most certainly a relative of Matthew's wife Letitia CASKEY.

Another will dated Feb. 4, 1897 of a Paul CASKEY of Kiltinney, parish of Macosquin, Co. L'derry, farmer, of weak mind and body mentions in his will a wife Elizabeth (Eliza)
son David
son Joseph
daug. Mary
daug. Maggie (prob. a Margaret...and her 3 children Samuel, Paul and Eliza).
He appoints as his Executors of his estate as Matthew MOODY of Cashel and James CASKEY of Craymore and the witnesses were James KENNEDY of Ballyclough and Wm. James CASKEY of Croughan.

Just as a side note - from Griffiths Valuations of 1848-1864 (hard to narrow down which year this one is)
In the parish of Dunboe, Hunters Glebe, Co. L'derry
is a Thomas MOODY
In same place but Big Glebe is an Andrew CASKEY
Same place but in Ballyhacket, Magilligan is a Jacob FINLAY and Andrew WILSON

In same Valuations table same time span
Drumachose, Co. L'derry in Mullane
James CASKEY

same place but in Derrymore is
James SHANNON

In Parish of Aghadowey, Co. L'derry and a place called Meencraig
was Paul CASKEY

Some book I found on line shows variants of the CASKEY name as MacAskie, MacCaskie/Caskey etc. and says its probably of Norse origins.
That's enough for one day...hope this is helpful and that I didn't make any typo's or get the family lines confused with each other, if so I'll be back to make corrections.
