Hi Carol,
Yesterday while I was laid up for most of the day, I went through my "Maine Families in 1790" series...I have vols. 1-8, and Not one of them had anything about Samuel Moody or Hodgkin Moody as sons of Joshua and Tabitha Cox MOODY either which really surprised me. I know that Joshua and Tabitha were pre-1790, but I fully expected to find something regarding a link back to them and I just didn't see it if its there.
I have NO idea where I got the info about Samuel b.1742 to them came from either?! When my grandmother died and I inherited all of her genealogical works etc., I really flung myself into finding our MOODY branch. All she ever told me about our Moody's was that they came from Lowell, MA. Well that was not entirely true...I did find my 3rd grt. grandfather there but he was not from there, only living and working from there from about 1856 until his death around 1876/1877.
So the first place I started researching was the obvious William 1 MOODY line of Newbury, MA.
I was absoulutely convinced that was my line for many years until a very nice man who descended from the Joshua & Tabitha Cox MOODY branch whose descendants removed to Oxford Co., ME showed me Proof that the Joseph Moody I thought was my 4th grt. grandfather could not be.
I had by that time gathered an enormous amount of information on these Moody's but back then I was very lazy at making notes of the Sources. Something a lot of novice genealogists start out doing and then later realize just how important those Sources are going to be to you later on.
At any rate, I am sorry that I don't have a good reliable source for you for the info I have. I do have an Elias, Nathan and Samuel MOODY over in the Webster, Androscoggin Co., ME area which is of course very near to Lewiston where your Nathan came from and the names in common and the locations have always puzzled me.
No one seems to know where Elias MOODY came from either.
He married Lettice LIBBY daughter of Matthew or Mathias Libby and a woman whose last name was HASTY, I can't recall her first name now. I have posted a great deal on the Moody about them too. Perhaps the Samuel MOODY from the Elias line somehow got confused into the Joshua Moody line, I don't know. Its hard to say.
I do wish I could be of more help to you, but right now, I just don't have any good answers for you, but again, I can't find a good source for the birth of a son Samuel to Joshua and Tabitha either.
Maybe eventually it will be surface.
Good Luck to you on your research and take care.
