You make some really great points here. People can learn a lot from your well earned experience!
For myself, I'd rather know who my ancestors really are rather than be left with a fib. I get none of my self-worth from what those who came before me did. But there are those who just go to far in their efforts to discredit a researcher who tells them what they don't want to hear. I've had that happen in my direct paternal line. Some might be surprised how far some individuals will go to hold on to their cherished family myths. It sounds like you know from whence I speak.
