Hi,
I had absolutely no luck at all Except that while researching the ancient Scotland records I found no one named "Joshua" Moody. Are they sure about this name?
I found James galore, John's galore, and several "Laurance's" (spelled that way), but not a single Joshua Moody in Scotland.
The "Lake Umbagog" birth place for Nathan has always bothered me as well because it borders NH way up in Oxford Co., and then another entry will say Lisbon, ME which is way down in Androscoggin Co., not too awfully far from Brunswick / Topsham area where some of my Moody's lived.
Then from the bio on James C. Moody who moved to Wisc., it says that James grandfather was Nathan who was born on Lake Umbagog.Nathan was a son of Lawrence A. MOODY and he was a son of Joshua R. MOODY who was a native of Muirkirk, Ayrshire, Scotland.
It says that Joshua recvd. a land grant in ME from the King of England and that he was appointed Lt. Gov. of the Province of Maine in 1692.Surely there Must be something in the History books about this. That is quite an appointment.
So, Joshua R. Moody (wonder what the "R." stood for?Robert? Ross?
Then it goes on to say that Joshua's son Lawrence and "another son" served under Gen. Wolfe at the Heights of Abraham and that Lawrence was wounded there but the "brother" was killed.
Nathan Moody and "a brother" were soldiers in the War of 1812, and then Another brother named "Alexander" was in the Fla. Seminole War where he was supposed to have been killed, but it doesn't say definitively.
I am just guessing but I would imagine that Lawrence A.'s middle name was "Alexander" as that is a very common Scottish name and might be another name to research in Scotland in the area of Ayrshire. However, Ayshire is not a common area for the Moody's.They were found in great number in the area of Forfar, Dundee and Aberdeen. Several in Glasgow and Edinburgh and many in Dumfermline later on.
Another thing that doesn't quite jell with this line is that Joshua R. Moody came to Maine in 1692, so I'm guessing he was at least age 21 when this occured. It is assumed he married in Maine? So, I give this Joshua R. Moody an estimated Birth Year of around c1668.
Then he probably married around lets just say c1700.
This puts Lawrences birth year about 50 years waaay off in my estimation. Its not impossible that's for sure, and it may be that Lawrence is from a 2nd marriage or was among the very last of Joshua's children born. Or Joshua married later in life. There are a lot of variables to consider...but due to the lack of information about this Joshua R. Moody from Scotland, and his son Lawrence A. Moody, I could never determine much more about them then what is already posted.
It is just amazing to me all of the separate MOODY / MOODIE lines that appear All in the Same areas of New England.
I would be willing to bet that we all have some Serious Errors among each and every line too. With the exception perhaps of the English line of Moody's from Newbury, MA and Hartford, CT.But the Scottish lineage lines...like Clement's and your Joshua R. Moody's, forget it, they just are not to be found with such ease.
There are 2 things from this line, no, 3 things that have always made me stop and take second and third looks though, and that is the mention of the brother in the Seminole Wars in Fla., the fact that this James ended up in Wisc. and that his Father Hiram lived in Topsham, ME and was involved with the Cod Fisheries and was involved in the Lumbering business as well.
A member of from my own family a son of my 3rd grt. grandfathers, served in the Civil War and when he was released from his duties, traveled around the U.S.He first went to Fla. and then to Wisc.
My question is, Did Alexander Moody really die down there or did he live, marry and have family who stayed in contact via letters etc. with those in Maine? My relative then went to Wisc. and worked in the lumbering business himself but then went on to Calif. where he married, had one son, his wife died soon after and he settled in northern CA where he remained the rest of his life.
Also because my own Moody family were all cod fisherman, lobsterman, clam diggers, lumbermen, and mill workers in those days, made me stop and take another look at this Nathan Moody line.
One other thing and then I will end this encyclopedia I have written, is the name of the daughter Affadilla.Do you know anything about her?
In the 1850 census living with my 4th grt. grandparents was a "female" named "Apey" Moody. This was the way it spelled by the census take.I am thinking this was probably a poor attempt at spelling "Affie". There was also a Caroline Moody. These women were in their late 30's and age 40, so "Apey" was in the correct time frame of Nathan's daughter Affy.
And finally Elias Moody of Lisbon, ME and Webster, Androscoggin Co., ME. He had some relation to a Nathan Moody that I have never been able to determine and now that I read over the bios of James C. Moody in Wisc. I am wondering if Elias was not the "brother" who served with him in the War of 1812??
I have never been able to determine the Parentage of this Elias Moody who was said to have been born in Scarboro, but I don't believe that. There was also a Maj. Moses Moody who was said to have been born in Scarboro, ME too but I don't know if that's so either.Ironically, Elias and Major Moses Moody were both born around the same time of each other, and they both married Libby women.Major Moses went to Cape Elizabeth, ME and Elias on to Webster, Androscoggin Co., ME.Somewhere on this board I posted info about Elias and his link to a Nathan Moody. Its been a while back and I do so much work on these Moody's that I sometimes get them a bit mixed up when I type from memory as I am now, but it might be worth checking into.
There might be a link there somewhere. I could never find it, but I sure gave it the old college try. (grin)
Thanks for sharing your info on your family, and as I am always researching the Moody's now, I continue to keep my eyes open for anything new or what appears to be new to me anyway, so if I ever see anything, I always come back here to post it.
Thanks again and good luck with your research.
