I'm laughing because I had just written that in my previous reply to your post on this and when I checked this message you said what I just wrote...that Mary was adopted by Benj. and his possible 2nd wife Lucy. And Yes it is Highly likely that her birth name was Thompson or even Thomas.Very common Indian names among the Mi'kmaw (Micmac) and Passamaquoddy, and probably others. My own 4th grt. grandmother used the name THOMAS which threw me for a loop in finding out her real last name.I have an idea she had Thomas and Mitchell links in her Indian family.
Mary Ann IF that was Mary's name, is also Hugely Common among the Indians of that area and her name when spoken would probably sound more like "Molly".The same way that the very famous Indian healer woman Molly Molasses' real name was "Mary".
IF IF IF, Lucy, Mary and Ruth were Indian, and I have a pretty good idea that they were, the Canadian link showing up like that later on in the census' (1900 I think was the first time Lucy stated that she was born there), means they were trying to "hide" in the earlier census...Especially around 1870 when the Indian's had their own slot on the census for being enumerated.IF they could pass for whites which many of them did, they would. It was during that time that so many of them were being sent out West and forced onto reservations, so the Indians probably did their best to look as white as possible.
This is another reason why I think my James and family belong with the Pvt. Clement...because this branch which includes Mike Jensen's seems to have a lot of Indian connections.Mike's grt. grt. grandmother, even though she's a Clay looks so much like many of the folks in my family its uncanny.Barbara G.'s family also has this Indian link and of course my 3rd grt. grandfather was an Indian doctor and traveled all over working with Chief Big Thunder (Frank Loring) etc. in his traveling Indian shows.
There is also great speculation but it all sure seems to fit Very well especially since I made contact with one lady last year who Was Indian and who linked right into my Moody family from Harpswell, that I may be related to Mary (Selmore) Mitchell who was a Passamaquoddy Indian healer.
She was related to Sebattis Mitchell who was an Indian doctor and who I believe my Hannah Mitchell was related and who I believe my Dr. Joe may have learned from.
Also Lewey(Louis) Mitchell I believe was my Hannah's brother as he shows up in the Bath, Lincoln Co., ME area around 1860/1870 and he too was an Indian doctor with children named both Joseph and Hannah.
My Indian story is a very long one...but there are so many possibilites. But IF this Mary A. T. Moody was a Thompson, then Ruth could be her child and in the Indian world, for Mary not to be married is no big deal.
OR Mary may have adopted her just so she could help around the house. The Indian people were always taking in children.
There's a lot of info regarding all of that, but I won't blabber on and on about it as for now its all just speculation without a bit more proof or something more substantial to go on, but it sure seems to be pointing in that direction from my own observations.
Thank you again So much for finding this info, every little bit we can find on the Pvt. Clement side of the family is an added bonus because so little is known of them it seems.
