Nicholas MOODY in NH c1684
The mystery Nicholas Moody that was in NH early on at around c1684 I believe, may not have been from the CT line of Moody family.
Yesterday I did some research on the name of Nicholas Moody and surprisingly found very little.
What I did find however may be clues at least as to his lineage.
From very early Wills from Litchfield, Birmingham and Derby, England I found listed in an Index (no will info), a Nicholas MOODYE dated 1551.
From an old BLAKE family genealogy I have there is sentence that states Nicholas MOODY who was in Exeter, NH in 1684 was Not of the Newbury, MA line but that he ~may~ have come from the Isle of Jersey.
There is no mention if Nicholas stayed in NH.
My thinking is that he was probably a scout of some sort sent to NH by the King perhaps to check out the land situations or some other mission. He may have returned to England.I can find numerous listings in the Old records of England for Nicholas Moody's.
In a 1935 Supplement to the Leonard Weeks family genealogy which is on the descendants of Samuel Weeks of Danville, VT, it gives the Ancient history of the Weeks family dating back to 1165. Through a series of letters written etc. and record extractions returned there is a curious one mentioned...
Under Edmund WYKES of Gloucester and Somerset [England]
Dated Feb. 26, 1504 - Grant for life to Edmund Wykes of the officer of Keeper of Oakley Park (Glos.) - Void by the death of Nicholas MOODY.????
After that there are Several entries for a "Nicholas" Wykes.
The next time I see any Nicholas MOODY's mentioned in New England history is from Newburyport, MA when he is on a list of men who marched with Capt. Moses NOWELL from Newburyport April 19, 1775 against the British troops. Nicholas MOODY is listed a Private.[MA Archives muster rolls Vol. XIII pg. 17]
Nicholas MOODY along wiht a Joseph MOODY both Privates also appear on a list of men who were in Capt. Ezra Lunt's company, Col. Nathaniel Waide's Reg. who served in a late expedition against "ye rebels" from Feb. 23 to July 2, 1787.
If I find more I will post it, but now it seems that Nicholas Moody who was in NH in 1684 may have come from England and he either died here or perhaps went back to England. There is no mention of any family etc.
