Hello George! How wonderful that you are from Ireland. You are correct in that the Moonan name is rare. But I have been corresponding with a distant relative, Mary Claire (Moonan) Jordan who lives in Minneapolis, MN and found there are lots of Moonans in the states. The Moonan name, as you may know, is of Danish origin. That is why it is not listed with the Irish names of old. If you have occasion to get to Co. Louth, I am sure you will find plenty of info on Moonans, as that's where many of them came to Dublin from. I have a cousin in Dublin that I may ask to do some research for me. She should be able to access records that should now be available. If you have a chance to research Co. Louth, specifically Ardee and Drakestown, I would love to hear of it. Let me know! Thanks
