I have been assisted recently by a wonderful resident of Knottingley who is researching the Moorhouse and Sefton families there.I will need to check with him before I mention his name.We both believe Mary Seftons' father to be William Sefton Jnr (not Robert Sefton as most family stories suggest). The researcher has gone through the Knottingley and Pontefract registers and only some of the family stories that were told seem to fit in.Mary Sefton baptised 30 Nov.1751,Daughter of William Jnr had 8 brothers :John 12 July 1747,William 21 Aug,1749,Michael 12 May,1754;Thomas 18 Aug 1756;David 28 Aug 1758;Samuel 24 Aug 1760;James 12 Oct 1763;and Benjamin 19 Feb 1769 .All these were recorded at St Bodolphs ,Knottingley. Apparently the church didn't always forward on it's records to Pontefract.
William Sefton was a farmer who became a limeburner and bought a quarry adjoining Middle Fields Quarry(listed under the 1790s Enclosure Act).William Moorhouse born around 1750 was a 'waterman' and later a quarry owner, limestone merchant, mariner and ship owner. His son William who married Anne Carter continued in the same business and William Snr and Jnr were listed in the Baines Directory and Census records of HillTop ,Knottingley. The parents of Anne Carter of Howden, had a brewery there and later established a brewery at Knottingley. It seems that the early Seftons and Moorhouse families of Knottingley and Pontefract where not "gentry" but hard workers. We are now checking if William Moorhouse was the one bap.30 April 1750 son of John Moorhouse. There is a John Moorhouse marrying Ellinor Fernley 19 Feb.1750, but the Knottingley researcher is going to check the Wakefield records before we say anything is fairly certain.Does anyone else have similar theories?
