Also somewhere around here I have a copy of an old Auchmuty genealogy in which the author tells of the ancient name being from Scotland and as I recall its a very impressive old Scottish family.
I suspect the "MOOTY" surname is a shortening of the "Auch" which I believe; but am not certain was similar at earlier times like "Mc" is to the Scottish surnames now.
If I can find that genealogy I will come back here and post more info for you, if that is helpful.
It may take a while as its been about 3 months since I've seen that copy and I've probably packed away in a box by now.
