Oh Betty!
Morey Mercantile was founded by Chester Stephen Morey in the late 1800's.His son John William Morey took over upon his retirement.Chester was born in Dane County, Wisconsin, in 1847.Served in Civil War, went to school in Illinois, then came west as "the pioneer salesman" for a grocery company serving several western states. He married Anna Laura Clough in Denver in (from memory here -- but I have dates recorded) 1873, and had 2 children. He died in 1922 and is burried at Fairmont with his wife.
Chester's father, William, was born in Pennsylvania, married a Hannah in 1846,reportedly died in Civil War "at Savannah".They had 5 children I know of:1) Chester Stephen, 2) Newell (b. 1851 - WI), 3) Alfred (b. 1853 - WI), Harvey N. (b. 20 Nov 1856-WI), and Orlando (b. 1859 - WI).
In searching the Colorado Historical Society's archives, I came across a William Morey, a relation of Chester's, who was born around the time of John William (late 1800's) and worked at the Mercantile. In fact, many relatives worked there I have learned.
Who was your "dad"?Does his story fit into the above?I'd love to pull these links together, and can provide you with more specific b/m/d dates to supplement your records.
