Actualy that song must have caused quite a thrill in the old days when a trip to Thurles would have been an excursion. Here was Johnny M. taking on all comers in Tierra del Fuego while "With Yankee Saxon, Russian cheers thw valley did resound"
I think this fight took place when yer man was in transit around Cape Horn going to or coming from San Francisco.
Strangely, Morrissey was one of three major pize fighters from that part of Tipperary in the second half of the nineteenth century. the others being Paddy Ryan (John L. Sullivan's opponent and John Carmel Heenan.
Stranger yet, they all emigrated to the Troy, New Yorkarea.
