Hi Mike, I just read your message dated in 2001.
Captain Mortier was most likely Samuel Spratt.
Samuel Spratt from Dorset, England, established a trans-atlantic Poole-Newfoundland mercantile business during the 1700's.He owned a fleet of ships, and plantations / fishing rooms at Mortier and other locations in Placentia Bay.
Samuel Spratt married Mary Slade on December 7, 1738, at Winfrith Newburgh, Dorset.Mary Slade was a sister of John Slade, well-known Merchant of Poole, Dorset and Twillingate.
On July 28, 1770, Samuel Spratt prepared his Will at Mortier. An entry in the Isaac Lester Diaries suggests he died on August 6, 1770, likely at Mortier.
I have additional information on the Spratt and Slade families.Your mention of the "Spratt" gravesite marker at Mortier is intriguing.I would like to photograph it, if it is still visible there.
