"Missing" Morton/Martin Family Etowah County, AL??
I am really struggling to figure out my family's connection to the Morton family, but keep running into a brick wall. Here's the story. It's complicated...sorry for that.
My ggg grandmother was Frances Elizabeth Martin (??) who married Andrew Watts/Watson in St Clair, AL in 1848.She had at least one sister and 3 brothers. Her sister was Mary Ann and she married Joel Battles. Her brothers were William, Philip and Miles. All of these were born in South Carolina 1827-1833 and are in St Clair area by 1840 living with their mother, Fances Elizabeth Smith (Smith was their stepfather). Her brother Miles and Philip homesteaded land just off Gallant Rd in present day Etowah County, AL in 1858 on the cut-off road to Morton's Chapel. They were using the name Martin at that time.Later,in 1870 Miles uses the name Myles Morton. This is the only time he does that. However, Philip used Morton and so did his daughter.Miles used Martin after 1870 exclusively as did his children.Miles was married to two Walker sisters...Sarah Adeline and Martha Mary, who were daughters of Felix Walker.Miles lived very close to William N. Morton and his children throughout his life. He also lived close to the children of Charles Morton. He served in the same Civil War unit as several Mortons. Miles died in Crawford's Cove in 1896. I believe Miles is buried close to these Mortons in Blount County in an unmarked grave. My Frances Martin/Morton Watson lived out her life in the same area of Gallant Rd and is buried in Conn Cemetery with several of her children.
All of this leads me to believe that Miles and his siblings were really Mortons who were somehow related to Jenothan and Lucy Morton since they were connected to them in so many ways. It is also passed down in many branches of this family that they were Native American.
I really want to make sense of all this.Does anyone know of a "missing" Morton family that changed the name to Martin?Did Jenothan have more than one wife?
