Sex: M
Birth: in Powhatan County, VA
Death: ABT. 1818 in Buckingham County, VA
Note:
The following information regarding the life of Arthur Moseley, was brought to my attention via a letter written to me by Elberta Brummet of Lexington, NE. (received: March 1, 1997) She obtained the information from a book written by John Hale Stutesman of San Francisco, CA, entitled "Some Watkins Families of Virginia and Their Kin".

Through 1810, "Arthur Moseley (son) of Ben" paid the "Land Tax" in Powhatan County on his "400 acres (acquired) from Benj. Moseley". In 1811, "Arthur and Nancy Moseley of the County of Buckingham sold their "400 acres on the headwaters of Fighting Creek" in Powhatan County to
Arthur's brother, Richard, who had married a sister of Nancy Watkins.
Arthur signed his name, but Nancy could only make her mark. (source: Powhatan Co., VA Deed Book 4, p. 333).

Evidently, they had moved west to Buckingham County, VA. A personal Property Tax there in 1807 first shows "Arthur Moseley S B (son of Benjamin)" with three taxable slaves and two horses. The 1820 census of Buckingham County, counted Arthur Moseley with his wife, five white males
under ten and 18 slaves.

Buckingham County deeds of that period disappeared in a fire, but Land Tax records through 1817 show that Arthur Moseley held land on "Crooked Creek" in the southeastern part of that county, In 1818, both "Land" and
"Personal Property" tax lists show "Arthur Moseley, estate". (That is the evidence that he died in 1817/18. No will or record of his estate settlement survived the Courthouse fire).

The "Estate (of) Arthur Moseley," a curious way to describe a "head of household," was counted in the 1820 census of Buckingham County, showing a large family. In 1830 and 1840, it was clearly "Nancy Moseley" who
headed her household, including 15 slaves. "Personal Property Tax" records follow her in Buckingham County through 1844.

An event in another county allows us to identify eight children of Arthur and Ann (Watkins) Moseley. In January 1832, after the death of Arthur's childless brother, Richard Moseley, in Powhatan County, the "Children of
Arthur Moseley, dec'd" made a claim in the Powhatan County Court for a share of their uncle's estate. (source: Powhatan Co., VA. Court Order Book 22, p. 142).
