John & Emma Mossman- South Dakota, 1910?

I am new to genealogy research and am coming up against the problem of very vague details in our family history! I think that John and Emma (Hefner) Mossman are originally from Germany and know that they settled at least briefly in South Dakota. They both had died by the 1930s. Some of their children's names are John, Peter, Helen, and Agnes. Where should I start the research process with such limited information?
