Another MORTON family researcher has been working on the MORTON-MOTHERSHEAD connection with my brother and I. Our grandmother was a MOTHERSHEAD, descended from William, who was a son of Nathaniel who died in 1781 in VA.

I've already conveyed to our research partner my growing suspicion that Alvin MOTHERSHEAD was *only* a godfather to Wm MORTON's children.

We've not been able to find anything so far that indicates an actual familial relationship with the MORTONs. That doesn't mean it doesn't exist, of course, and we are still working on the problem.

But I agree with the earlier posting: my personal opinion is that an earlier MOTHERSHEAD researcher ignored the word "godson", and jumped to the *assumption* that Alvin wouldn't possibly have left all of his estate to people he wasn't related to by blood. Being a godparent was a very serious thing in the 1700s, though, and if Alvin died with no wife and childless, he easily could have decided to leave his estate to his godchildren.

However, even if Ann MORTON turns out to not have been born a MOTHERSHEAD (which I suspect is the case), the MORTON and the MOTHERSHEAD families were in the same area for well over a hundred years. It would not surprise me at all to find that there is a true connection between the two families, just not necessarily the one with William MORTON. Especially considering in the early 1800s there was a gentleman living in MO who had the name of Morton MOTHERSHEAD. If we aren't related by blood somewhere along the way, it is at least a *very* close friendship :)

Please be a little careful when using Marie Davis' book - it's useful as a tool with clues and guides as to *what* to search for or where to search, but you need to be able to verify the information yourself whenever possible since a few things stated in her book are not quite correct. Also, in most cases she does not list sources for her information.

We have a website dedicated to our genealogy research. It doesn't have all our information on it yet, but we are adding data as rapidly as possible - complete with source information. And if anyone has more information on the MOTHERSHEADs, or any of the collateral lines, we're always delighted to share our information. Hope you'll visit!
