I have been told that Mottrom/Mottram and Mothershead are the same family. Is this true ?

Col John Mottrom is reputed to be the first white man to settle in Northumberland/Westmoreland Co VA. Why do you suppose he would name it Northumberland Co instead of Cheshire ? He died there in 1655.
