My Mothershead Family book, by Mattie T. Logsdon,

On page 99 I find: "Thomas Marsalas Mothershead, seventh child of Christy and Elvira, was born 27 March 1859 in Lowndes County (now Crenshaw), Alabama. He was living with his brother, Lum, in 1880 (census). But later came to Texas where he married Mary Frances Angel on 11 January 1886 in Johnson County. Mary Frances was born ca 1869 and died 3 November 1893. They had..."

"Reports of cousins seem to agree that Thomas left Johnson county, spending the night with his brother, John, and telling him that he had just done the hardest thing any person could ever do - he had left his two little boys with their mother and her parents. There had been a stormy session and his wife, Mary Frances had said: 'I wish I didn't even have to use your name.' His reply was: 'I'll take care of that immediately.' He simply dropped the name Mothershead and never used it again. From then on he added Patrick and used his middle name MARSALAS, which was a family name-that of a grandmother."
