Judy - I agree that the name is so unusual that your guess is probably good. The Moulthrop name is unique to the descendants of Matthew Moulthrop, early member of the New Haven Colony founding in 1637. Prior to the American Revolution, the family was found almost exclusively in the New Haven, CT area. I'm not aware of any family in Putnam County, NY - so if your Nickerson ancestor was truly connected his mother was almost certainly from CT. Given the difficulties locating marriage details of women in colonial records, I'm very interested in any clues you can provide. I may be able to provide the names of potential parents given enough information on the offspring of Nickerson.
I've looked briefly for Huldah Grey/Gray in Jacobus "Families of Ancient New Haven" and she does not appear - which indiciates only that her family was not an early resident specifically in New Haven prior to about 1750. Huldah is a common name for the time period in CT so the clues fit.
