I believe I spoke to one of your relatives a few years ago. The correct spelling is MOUTAW. The original spelling was MOUTON. As the story goes the family changed the spelling of the name to sound more like the indian tribe that inhabited the area in St. Joseph County Michigan. Francois Mouton came to the Mendon,MI area in about 1835. He ran a trading post, and delt with many indians. I have found that anyone with the name Moutaw in their family line, are direct descendants of this Francois Mouton. I have a lot of information on the Moutaw's and would be happy to talk to you.
