I need your help in creating an accurate accounting of those who were involved in the massacre of Fort Mims which occurred August 30, 1813, in that part of the MS Territory that would become Alabama. Since the whole territory was involved in aiding those under attack by the Creek Indians in the Tensaw/Tombigbee region, volunteer units were called up from the Natchez district, including men from the Jefferson/Claiborne area. I have a few names of the 1st Mississippi Volunteers: Lt. William R. Chambliss - survived, died about 10 years later in Claiborne Co. MS A. J. Morris (John Morris?) - survived Joseph Cook Pvt. Abner Daniels of Jefferson Co. MS Sgt. John Mountjoy James Bealle Pvt. Nehemiah Page Lt. James Bailey Maj. Daniel Beasley - lawyer from Jefferson Co. and commandant at Fort Mims, killed Ensign George S. Gibbs Captain William Jack -born March 1786 in Adams Co. MS, mother was Mary Daniels. William Jack was in the 1810 census of Jefferson Co. MS , died Capt. Hatton Middleton - Born 1784, married Mary Graham in 1807 in Adams Co. MS, led a unit from Concordia Parish LA, died Lt. Spruce M. Osburn/Osborne - surgeon, died Sgt. Daniel Rishbury/Kinbury/Kingsbury If you have any information on these or others that were at Fort Mims, please let me know. The list is being prepared for the Alabama Historical Commission. Thanks, Sue Moore sbmoore@swbell.net Notify Administrator about this message?
