I lived in Natchez for 25 years until this year when I moved to Tennessee. The old box factory is located where the current Capri Casino parking lot is situated. That site was half way up the hill from Natchez "Under-the-Hill" at the riverside and toward the site of old Fort Rosalie (also known as Fort Panmure during the British period). The site itself was the location of the French commandant's quarters, the garrison's barracks, etc. until the Natchez Indians rose up and murdered the French settlers circa 1729. The French returned in force about 1732 and proceeded to exterminate the Natchez tribe in retribution (vengeance). The old box factory was just that, a box factory where wooden shipping boxes were constructed from wood sawn from trees floated down river, hauled up the slope on a funicular (cog) railway and cut by saws powered by a steam boiler. Until a couple of years ago, the large, very high, old brick stack from the steam boiler was still visible. Then it was torn down because of the danger to Capri patrons parking adjacent to the stack that began to lose bricks from the top. If you need more information on this subject, I suggest you contact the Historic Natchez Foundation. They are listed in the local phone book and can give you significantly more information than provided here. I believe the box factory was closed about early to mid-1930s. Photos of the box factory can be found in several local shops and at the Audubon Gallery. Regards... Notify Administrator about this message?
