Eula Mattox Wilhite, 80, died April 27, 2009, at her home. Better known as “Ma-Maw” and the Cake Lady, Mrs. Wilhite is famous for her coconut cakes. For the past 20 years, Mrs. Wilhite has been associated with the Hitching Post Restaurant. She made homemade desserts for the restaurant along with baking at home for her many customers. During the holiday season she made at least 11 cakes per day, not including the pies. She was always making cupcakes and cookies for the great-grandchildren’s school parties. Not only did she bake for them, she enjoyed having them stay with her. Her baking began at the age of 4 when she would sneak to the creek and get her mother’s flour and sugar for her cakes and had an oven dug out in the side of a bank and make her brother help her cook. She donated cakes to benefits; some would bring as much as $500 and then they would sell them by the slice. One did not go to her home without having a piece of cake or slice of pie and coffee, did not matter how busy she was. She was always giving to those in need or just because she wanted to. It was impossible to get ahead of her. She always was one step ahead in giving. She was also known for her care packages she gave weekly and monthly. Mrs. Wilhite was an active member of Union Baptist Church and enjoyed attending Monday night singing at a neighboring church. Most of all she enjoyed having her family around. She loved her Lord and her family and never failed to let them know. Services were at Union Baptist Church. Burial was in the church cemetery. McPeters Funeral Directors was in charge of the arrangements. Survivors included two sons, Kenneth V. Wilhite, and Jimmy Lee and Judy Wilhite, all of Corinth; one sister, Kate Meekins of San Angelo, Texas; five grandchildren, Kathy Inman (Clay), Julie Goodrich (Cliff), Lee Bo Wilhite (Angie), Clint Wilhite (Jennifer) and Kenny Wilhite (Jenessa); six great-grandchildren, Rope Inman, Pecos Wilhite, Kota Wilhite, Wyatt Wilhite, Chism Goodrich and Savannah Wilhite; and her special neighbors, Joyce Mattox and Kathryn Mills. She was preceded in death by her husband of 52 years, H.V. Wilhite; one sister, Lottie Mattox Bradley; four brothers, Herman Mattox, Leon Mattox, Ellis Mattox and Bill Mattox; and a granddaughter, Debbie Wilhite. Notify Administrator about this message?
