George Smith Brooks, 86, died May 8, 2009, at the North Mississippi Medical Center in Tupelo. He was born July 16, 1922, in Selmer, Tenn., to the late I.H. and Pearl Brooks. He attended Riverside Military Academy and graduated from Selmer High School. While attending The University of Tennessee he served as Vice President of the Sigma Chi Fraternity. As a cadet within the ROTC program he was selected for Officer Candidate School. Upon graduation from UT with a degree in Industry Engineering, he was commissioned as an Officer serving as Army Engineer in various units including the 30th Armored Division and the 598th Airborne Engineers where he was trained as a combat glider officer. After being discharged with honors from the United States Army as a Major, he was employed with DuPont as Junior Power Engineer and later by the Atomic Energy Commission at Oak Ridge, Tenn. He retired from Tyrone Hydraulics - Dana Corp. after 45 years serving as Engineer/Sales Manager. During his tenure, the company recieved numerous patents for innovative product solutions as well as the President “E” Award for excellence in exporting in recognition of outstanding contributions to the increase of U.S. Trade abroad from President Nixon.
Services were at the Memphis Funeral Home, Poplar Chapel. Burial with military honors was in the Memorial Park Cemetery. Memorial Funeral Home was in charge of local arrangements.
Survivors included his wife of 46 years, Myra L. Brooks of Corinth; daughter, Debbie Henry (Rich) of Olive Branch; sons, Stephen Brooks (Holly) of Smyrna, Ga., and Keith Brooks (Stacy) of Corinth; sisters, Bernice Gooch of Ramer, Tenn., and Juanita Gillespie-Fuller of Olive Branch; grandchildren, Jessica and Rachel Henry and Madeline and Lauren Brooks.
