James Reed, 82, died June 8, 2009, at the North Mississippi Medical Center in Tupelo. He was born April 7, 1927, in Rienzi to Tom and Roxie Wilemon Reed.A member of Rienzi Baptist Church, he helped to build the existing church building. Each year on Friday of Vacation Bible School, he took all the children for a ride on a fire truck. After farming for many years, he worked for the City of Rienzi as Water Department manager and fire chief. He enjoyed gardening, especially growing tomatoes and sharing them with his friends. He loved working, being around other people, being “on the go” and his dog, Daisy.
Services were at the Booneville Funeral Home Chapel with burial in Rienzi Cemetery.
Survivors included two daughters, Sharon Phillips (Freddy) of Corinth and Sandra Church (Ray) of Booneville; two brothers, Joe Reed (Carolyn) of Corinth and Larry Reed (Tina) of Counce, Tenn.; four sisters, Mary Yancey of Rienzi, Emma Vandiver of Corinth, Carolyn Pace (Leonard) of Booneville and Martha Powers of Ontario, Canada; two granddaughters, Tracey Church Moreland (Josh) of New Site and Brooke Phillips Norris (Cory) of Pickwick, Tenn.; a great-grandson.
He was preceded in death by his wife of 59 years, Lois Reed, on Oct. 27, 2007; his parents; two sisters, Katherine Stanberry and Aden Hearn; and a brother, Jack Reed.
