I am trying to make the connection of my GGG Grandfather Raleigh Howell to a SAMUEL HOWELL, BETSY (HOWELL) LITTLE , WILLIAM HOWELL and HUDSON HOWELL. Raleigh Howell, was born around 1775-6 in Virginia with possible connections to North Carolina as he may have been named after a place name, Raleigh, NC. He first appears in Franklin Co., GA in 1793. Samuel Howell who purchased 108 acres the same year. Betsy Howell married a William Little, son of son of Col James H. Little and Isabella Hamilton. Isabella was also the daughter of a Col. Hamilton. Col. James Little commanded a North Carolina regiment in the war of the Revolution. Under the laws of Georgia made to attract settlers and reward revolutionary soldiers and officers, Col. Little came to Franklin county among the earliest settlers, and laid his bounty warrant upon a large tract of land on Nails creek, including the mouth of Littles creek, which took its name from him. Col. Little divided his land between his two sons William Little and James H Little. William Little sold his place and removed west to Barren Co., KY then on to Mississippi. In 1802 Raleigh Howell sold his land in Franklin Co., GA and migrated to Barren Co, KY. William and Betsy (Howell) Little on the same page of the 1810 Barren Co., KY census with Raleigh Howell, Samuel Howell and William Howell. William Howell falls off the radar screen in Kentucky after 1810. Hudson Howell was a private in the War of 1812 on the Roll of Captain Samuel F. Malone's Company, Kentucky Detached Militia - Commanded by lieutenant-Colonel William Mitchusson. Enlistment dates: 20 Nov 1814 to 20 May 1815. Source: Kentucky Soldiers of the War of 1812, Minnie S. Wilder, 1931. This company was of soldiers from Warren and Barren Counties in Kentucky. A Samuel Howell and Hudson Howell appear on the tax lists of Pike Co., MS as does William & Betsy (Howell) Little around 1820. ----------------------------------------------------------- HOWELL- HOLBROOK connection? Question: Is the William Howell appearing in Barren County in 1810 the son of Samuel & Mary (Hutson) Howell? There are a lot of common threads to Franklin Co., GA. It is ironic that a number of the descendants of the William Howell and Mary Pleasant "Polly" HOLBROOK named their first son, Raleigh Howell. The 1850 Copiah Co., MS census shows he was born in Kentucky. Their second son, Russell Jones Howell was named after one of the early settlers of Franklin Co., GA, RUSSEL JONES, a Revolutionary soldier who was born ca. 1745, Albemarle County, Virginia. His first wife, Anne Beasley. was born ca. 1753, Orange County, Virginia, and died ca. 1808, Franklin County, Georgia. The Russell Jones family came to Georgia from Wilkes County, NC. In the early 1790's. In 1780, the General Assembly of North Carolina divided the state into fiscal districts; each district was presided over by a Board of Auditors to hear all claims for public service, to fix prices for various supplies and services, and to issue, in payment of just claims, indented certificates (vouchers) signed by two of the auditors and countersigned by their Secretary. Russell Jones was one of the auditors for the counties of Burke, Lincoln, Wilkes, and Rutherford Counties, Morgan District after 1782. Other Raleigh Howells: Raleigh Pinkney Howell & Raleigh Wayne Howell in Calhoun Co., MS. Also, the Little family named some of their sons Rolly or Raleigh. ----------------------------------------------------------- 1810 Census - Barren County, KY KENTUCKY 1810 Wm Little 13001-10010-02 Note 1 KENTUCKY 1810 Wm Howel 00100-40100-00 Born between 1784-1794 Note 2 KENTUCKY 1810 Rolly Howel 42010-00010-01 Born about 1775-6 Note 3 KENTUCKY 1810 Saml Howel 00101-00001-00 Born before 1765 Note 4 Note 1: Five households from William Howell is William Little and Betsy (Howell) Little who were also neighbors of the HOWELLs in Franklin County, GA Note 2: William HOWELL and a Samuel HOWELL appear as neighbors of Rolly HOWELL, aka Raliegh HOWELL William HOWELL appears in the "16 to 26" age bracket with 4 daughters in the age "0-10" age bracket. Note 3: Raleigh HOWELL shows 4 boys in the "0-10" age bracket and 2 boys in the "16 to 26". That is 7 boys and I have accounted for only 5. Thus one may have died between 1810 and 1820. Note 4: Samuel HOWELL appears as "over 45 years old" on the 1810. A son in the 16-25 age bracket could possibly be Hudson Howell as both names appear on the 1821 Pike Co., MS tax list. Known children of Raleigh Howell: 1. Samuel HOWELL 1 Nov 1796 GA 2. James HOWELL 9 Apr 1799 GA 3. William HOWELL about 1801 GA 4. Robert HOWELL 18 Nov 1804 GA 5. Young HOWELL 1 Oct 1806 KY 6. Polly Ann HOWELL After 1810 KY 7. Sara Sally Howell 11 Aug 1811 KY Allen County formed from part of Barren County, KY KENTUCKY 1815 Allen County was not established until the year 1815. It was formed from portions of Warren and Barren Counties. Thus, the 1810 Census of Barren County includes some landowners that would eventually become part of Allen County 5 years later ----------------------------------------------------------- Chronological history: Howell & Little families in Georgia, Kentucky and Mississippi State Year Event Source Note GEORGIA 1785 James LITTLE 575 acres; 743 acres in 1795 in Franklin County. 3 GEORGIA 1793 Rolly HOWELL and Samuel HOWELL and William LITTLE references, and also early James LITTLE deeds, but not as witness or neighbor.
