Robert "Bob" Sledge and his sister, Rachel, were the children of Nancy Hill who apparently went by the name Sledge, since she was raised by a Sledge stepfather. These children were orphaned at a very young age and were living in the county poor house, which is where their mother had gone. They were taken in by Mr/Mrs Gip Winfield who had no children of their own. Rachel continued to live with the Winfields. She married Charlie Hill. Robert was living with the C. L. Barton family in 1890 when the school census was taken. The Bartons lived next door to the Winfields. Robert was listed as a Barton in the 1900 through 1920 census records. In 1900 he was living with Mrs. Mary J "Mollie" Perry, who was widowed and a neighbor of the Winfields. He was with Mrs. Perry in 1900, 1910, and 1920. He took out a marriage license in 1913 to Mary E. Pritchard in Pontotoc County. I don't know if they were actually married. In 1918 he was in Perry Co, AR where he signed up for the WWI draft, giving Rachel as his next of kin. In 1921 he married Mrs. Ollie Jackson in Pontotoc County. In 1930 he was a boarder in the house of Riley McMullins in Union County, stating that he was married. In 1930 I find a Norah Sledge, 27 who said she was widowed, living in Chickasaw County with two daughters, Jessie, 6 and Annie D, 4. This from someone who knew of Bob Sledge: He lived in Houston and made his living doing yard work, cutting wood and doing odd jobs. He had a houseful of kids. He died in Jan 1951 after being hit by a car in Houston. His funeral was paid for by a J. E. Murphy of Lepranto, AR.
