John and Elizabeth Chism are shown on 1850 census for Friars Point, where he was a Merchant, living next door to my ancestor, Edward Davis. At that point, they had one dau, Mary Chism age 2. Also in household was Darin Garvin, age 39, merchant, b. KY, along with 2 lawyers, David Briton and James L. Alcorn (who went on to become governor). A good friend to my ancestor was S. G. Chism, who was witness to marriage of J. R. Davis and Martha Applegate in 1876. And in the Riverside Cemetery Grave List you'll find John Thomas Chism b. 7/12/1895, d. 5/20/1937 WWII. (No Garvins listed.) Early history tells of one of the earliest businesses at Friars Point - the floating general store that the Chism brothers moved upriver to Friars Point when Point Royal was flooded out - see History of Clarksdale & Coahoma Co. at public library. Hope this helps. Elizabeth Embrey Notify Administrator about this message?
