Luke Lea was a half-brother to my great great great grandfather, John Sartin. I haven’t really done a lot of research on the Lea family yet but thought I’d try to do a little more digging into the mystery of who their mother actually was. I have a theory, but need to look at some of the original records in Amite County.

The Charles H. Lea who bought land in 1859 Copiah Co. was the son of Noble Lea, a brother to Luke. Charles married Mary Farmer in 1856 in Copiah Co. They were on the 1860 Copiah Co census with son Henry. Noble also had a son named George who was born in 1829 who may be the George who bought land in Lincoln Co but I am more inclined to believe it was a younger George who was probably a grandson to Luke or one of his brothers. Luke’s son, Thaddeus, married Permelia Viola Foster in 1860 so he may be the Thaddeus who bought land in 1859 & 1860.

I’m not sure where Hampton Lea fits in. If memory serves, the name was handed down several times in the Lea line but the only Hampton I know that was in Mississippi was born around 1800 in Amite Co. and was the son of Zachariah Lea. Zachariah was a brother to Luke Lea’s father, Joseph Lea.

Happy Hunting, Patti
