Does anyone know who Elizabeth Moorhouse, age 55, listed on the (Perry Co) now Forrest Co, MS 1850 Census is? She was born in Georgia. I feel sure she must be a widow, but cannot find any other Moorhouses' in Mississippi except for Reuben listed on the 1805 Census of Mississippi Territory (now Jefferson and Wilkinson Counties). Elizabeth has living with her, Elizabeth Palmer (my grgr grandmother)who married David Wesley Shattles in 1854. Does anyone know the connection here? Am searching for information on David Wesley Shattles and Elizabeth Palmer Shattles. They were listed on the 1860 census living in Brooklyn, but am trying to locate any other documents on David Wesley. He was from Upson Co, GA (possibly the son of John Shattles and Barbara Blackwelder Shattles). David was a miller and enlisted in Baton Rouge, LA, in the 38th Regiment of Mass. Volunteers in 1863(per his enlistment papers.) He was a cook and died of malaria in New Orleans in 1864 and is buried in Chalmette Cemetery. Elizabeth remained in Forrest Co, raising their children: Delphia, George Washington, and John Wesley Shattles. She is buried in the Brooklyn cemetery. Any information would be appreciated.
