I am researching my Lott heritage of Alice Artis Lott who married Stephen William Garner. Alice's parents were (according to her death cert.) John Lott and Mary Watts, although I find her with a G.W. Lott and Mary.
This is a tangled web of misinformation that has me banging my head against a wall!
Alice's siblings were:
Jeff Lott
John Claiborne Lott
Thomas Lott (Tom)
Robert "Bob" Lott
Mattie (Martha) Lott
Katie (Catherine) Lott
Wash Lott (Washington?)
F. Betty Lott
Charles Lott
Rachel Lott?
OK....according to the family, Alice's father died on route home from the Civil War from either starvation or wounds. He was with either an uncle or brother/s at that time. Now, this is a family story, not proven but told by Alice's daughters.
Also, according to the family, and records in Hattiesburg MS, Alice's father was John Lott and her grandfather was Thomas Lott.
At any rate, there is no doubt that there is some kind of Native American blood within my Lott and Garner lines...they all look to have some Indian blood in them, especially Alice and some of her children. Also, the Garners who are descendants of Alice and Stephen Garner in Winn Parish, LA look to have Indian in them.
The family says that Alice was at least 1/2 Indian, either Choctaw or Creek. Alice's daughter Betty Beulah Garner/Clifton is my great grandmother.
Alice was born March 1, 1860 in Lawrence Co., MS. She died in Winn Parish, LA in 1943. She and Stephen William Garner married in Lawrence Co., MS in 1887, which then after that they moved into Winn Parish, LA. and raised their children and siblings. Stephen William Garner's parents died of black phneumonia within 8 days of each other and he raised his siblings with Alice.
When Alice's father died, she was about 3 years old, living right next to the Pearl River which she played in as a child, the family says she lived on an Indian Reservation at the time. So, after Alice's father died, her mother died shortly after him. Alice and her siblings were raised by her eldest brother John Claiborne Lott.
The thing I'm needing is the 1870 Greene Co., MS census...ALL Lott's, Garner's, and Watts' listed within it.
Someone told me that a couple of Alice's siblings are in it living with other families, namely Jeff and Mattie.
Mattie married Joseph Wesley Cowart and Katie married James "Bud" Adams.
Please, if anyone can help me with this, I would be so greatly appreciative!! Thank you very much.
PS: Alice's mother Mary Watts was born in Hattiesburg, MS in the early 1800's. John was born in Mobile, AL.
Does anyone have any information on my Mary Watts being born in Hattiesburg???
