There is a small cemetery near where the State Insane Hospital was back then, though I think most of the graves are unmarked. Somebody who died in the Insane Hospital (which was its name in 1920) was not necessarily buried there, however. The best way to find out where the person was buried is by ordering a death certificate. It won't necessarily name a specific cemetery but will give at least a town. The current State Hospital (its current name -- the name changed from Lunatic Asylum to Insane Hospital to just State Hospital) at Whitfield does have records going back to 1920, though some are sketchy. And they are limited by law in how much information they can give you. They'll send you what they can for a very modest fee -- something like $7.50, I think. You can see the full information in the state archives in Jackson, though for some "inmates" the info is nothing more than name and age -- and there are gaps in the entries -- for some people there's nothing at all. The people I talked to at Whitfield when I discovered an "insane" ancestor were very nice, I might add. They're used to getting calls from genealogists, and they assured me that what was considered "insane" in 1920 would in many cases not be called that today. (My guess is that my ancestor had Alzheimers.) -- Natalie Maynor http://www.maynor.net/Genealogy/ Notify Administrator about this message?
