Johnston / McGowan (McGowen)

I'm looking for information on a Benjamin W. Johnston I found referenced in the Library of Virginia...
Died- At Mount Salus, Mi., on October 20, Benjamin W. Johnston, Clerk of the Northern District, a native of Virginia. (p. 3, c. 5)
Saturday, November 22, 1828.
Obituaries -- Virginia.
Richmond (Va.)

There is also a Benjamin Johnston with a large family two counties to the south in Marion County listed in the 1830 census. On the next page (115) is an Absalom Johnston with a large family and the head of household there is between 40 and 50 as of 1830. Further, back on page 114 and five households away from this Benjamin Johnston is a James McGowen household with head of household aged 40 to 50.

The Benjamin Johnston I'm trying to find lived in Greenville, SC at one time and at that time his neighbors were McGowans/McGowen. Does anyone know of any connection between them? Or can anyone give me any additional information on the Johnstons living in MS that might be of a clue?

Any information at all will be greatly appreciated.

Thanks,
Deronda
