African-American Felton’s Humphrey’s County Mississippi and Macon County Georgia. Hello, My name is Cary Marshall Felton and I am sharing my experience to assist anyone who may share my common ancestry. My brother Charles researched info at the SouthEast Census Office in Atlanta, Georgia. Marriage records are a good resource for information, but he found most written records before the 1860’s are hard to come by. My father Charles A. Felton was born in Humphrey’s County, Mississippi/Yazoo to Willie Felton of Humphrey’s County/Yazoo and Myrtis (Brown) of Hazlehurst, MS. Their children include James, Willie, Charles (all born in MS) Melvin, Roosevelt and Earline (all born in Nebraska). My great grandfather John Henry Felton (born 1878) of Humphrey’s County/Yazoo was married to Eliza (Vaughn). They were both born in Mississippi. Their children were Bessie, Ellen, Willie, Hughie, Leo, John (Red), Rosie, Jake, Kary, Louise and Estabena. According to 1910 Census Yazoo, Mississippi. My great great grandfather John Felton b.1845 of Macon County, GA was married to Rose Felton b. 1849. Both were born in Georgia and their parents were born in Georgia. Their children include Mary E., Gus (both born in GA.) Eveline and John Henry (both born in MS.). According to 1870 Macon County, GA Census/1880 Yazoo, Mississippi Census. I have limited inventory and wills of some farmers in Macon County. They are not complete and I am not certain of the dates. There is also a strong link between Macon Co. Georgia and Gates Co. North Carolina. Our families may have moved between these areas as property in the late 18th and early 19th Centuries. My father completed the African Ancesrty DNA test. They look at the Y chromesome in order to determine paternal ancetry. Each male has the same Y as his father, and his grandfather and his great-grandfather, etc. They traced us back to the Ibo people of Nigeria and the Ewondo people in Cameroon.
