Funeral services for Burgess Vaughn Umfress were held from the Union Grove Baptist Church at Tilden on Oct. 21, 1956 with burial in the Union Grove Cemetery with Pickle Funeral Home of Amory in charge. Mr. Umfress died of self-inflicted gun shot wounds. Death came Oct. 19 at the Gilmore Sanitarium in Amory. The wounds were suffered in his home in the Trace Roads Community near Amory on the night of Oct. 18th. Mr. Umfress, 38, a native of Itawamba County, had lived in the Trace Roads Community for about eight years. He was a sawmiller and timber cutter.

Survivors included his wife, the former Miss Frances Chism; two sons, Billy Vaughn 14, and Gary 13; his parents, Mr. and Mrs. K. E. Umfress of near Fulton; seven brothers, Homer, Marcus, Wayne and Paul Umfress of the Fulton area, Roy Umfress of Camden, Tenn., Lawrence Umfress of Zion, Ill., and Kelly Umfress of Amory; eight sisters, Mrs. Clarence Sikes, Mrs. Clyde Fielder, Mrs. Charlie Stanley and Patsy Umfress of the Fulton area, Mrs. Hershel Kyle of Dorsey, Mrs. Verdel Bray of Zion, Ill., Mrs. Perry Nix and Mrs. G. Nix of Amory.
