Services were held May 4, 1948 from the Smithville Methodist Church for Walter B. Palmer, prominent Monroe County farmer, who died at his home in Smithville on May 3rd. He was 86. Burial was in the Smithville Cemetery. Mr. Palmer was born in Tremont, but had lived in the Smithville Community for more than 50 years. He was active in all farm programs and was one of the county’s largest land owners. He was an active member of the Smithville Methodist Church.
Survivors included his wife, Mrs. Maude Armstrong Palmer; two sons, Milford Palmer of Manila, Ark., and Andrew Palmer of Memphis; two daughters, Mrs. O. B. Shotts of Tupelo and Mrs. Ada Stalnaker of Smithville; two brothers, Moman Palmer of Tremont and Javious Palmer of Fulton; a sister, Mrs. Bell Wigington of El Campo, Texas; 24 grandchildren.
