Uncle J. P. was the last of the children of Moman and Alice Pate. J.P. Pate Mr. J.P. Pate, late of Park Place, passed away July 21, 2008, at Keller Hospital. He was a native of Mississippi, lived his adult life in Colbert County and was a member of First Baptist Church, of Barton. Visitation will be 6-8 p.m. Thursday, July 24, at Morrison Funeral Home in Tuscumbia. The funeral service will be at 10 a.m. Friday, July 25, in the chapel, with burial to follow at Colbert Memorial Gardens. Brother William Hamilton and Brother Ralton McCarley will officiate. Mr. Pate was preceded in death by his wife, Madge Holt Pate; his parents, Moman Pate and Alice Pate; his brothers, Marvin, Marlin, Cleveland, D.C. and B.C.; his sisters, Mertie Mauldin, Dellie Adair, Faye Frederick and Pauline Hall; his son, James Pate; and his granddaughter, Alice McMeans. Mr. Pate is survived by: his wife, Frances Pate; his son, Charles Pate and wife, Rosalle; his daughter, Judy McMeans and husband, Maurice; his daughter-in-law, Grace Pate; grandsons, Jonathan Pate and wife, Michelle, Christopher McMeans and Steven McMeans; granddaughter, Michelle Pate; great-grandchildren, Noah Pate and Quinn Pate; stepdaughters, Sheila Jones and husband, Randy, and Patti Lambert and husband, Charles; stepgrandchildren, Erica Hogeland and husband, Chris, and Chase Lambert; stepgreat-granddaughter, Claire Hogeland; and Godson, Frank Varnell. Mr. Pate worked hard all his life, first when he was pulled out of school in the third grade and hired out to dig a ditch for a quarter every three rods, when he farmed, when he worked at Reynolds in the pot rooms until his back couldn't be fixed any more, then in his garden. His main goals in life were to take care of his family and to serve his Lord and Savior. He did that until his dying day. Mr. Pate and his wife, Madge, were charter members of Muscle Shoals Baptist Church. One of his proudest achievements was being ordained a deacon. He was also very proud to be a Mason. Pallbearers will be family and friends. Honorary pallbearers will be Hershell Pounders, Junior Elliott, Larry Thompson, Irvin Sledge and Ralph Garner.
