Could you help me with a family mystery? I’m looking for verification of the parentage of Jestina Elizabeth King/Trussell. I’ve enclosed the family legend in a copy of a letter sent to me by a cousin. Jestina is my husband’s ggrandmother and was Matriarch of the family in the grand Victorian sense. His aunt has a Victorian Era scrapbook made by her. Known facts: Born: November 17, 1862 in either Kemper or Lauderdale Co., MS married: James David Morton on November 21, 1883 in the home of Rufus Gunn King, (the man she always claimed to be her father) Kemper Co. MS with whom she had five kids Died: June 03, 1953 in Meridian, MS Buried: Magnolia Cem., Meridian, Lauderdale Co., MS Jestina’s mother was JESTINA ELIZABETH SPINKS b: May 27, 1840 Liberty, Kemper Co., MS d. April 30, 1932 at home 6 mi North of Meridian, Lauderdale Co., MS J.E. Spinks married (1) Elisha Trussell (I think) October 30, 1861, Kemper Co., MS (2)Rufus Gunn King January 24, 1867, Kemper Co., MS the Kemper County Courthouse burned in 1880's and I have not been able to locate adoption records, etc. I am going to spend a couple of days there and in Meridian this summer to see what I can find. Letter to me: Sue, Looking at your files. Justina Elizabeth Spinks first married Elisha Trussell. and he is the father of our Jestina "King". Look at the wedding dates for Justina Spinks and Rufus King. Jestina was born before their marriage, by several years. Years ago Uncle Ralph (Aycock) told Mama (Elsie) onetime, one of the blacks who had worked for Rufus King, [told a story] that Rufus King rode off on his horse one day and came back with the baby, baby meaning Justina King, I always thought that this was an illegitimate child off his, and put it to in the back of my mind. When I started looking at this side of the family I found Elisha. it is my supposition that Elisha's parents kept Jestina until her mother Justina Spinks Trussell remarried. Jestina King may or may not have known she was a Trussell, certainly I don't think her children knew. I remember Aunt Minnie - Horton's Sister, saying "you Know mama was a King." that was something special to her. Elisha Trussell was a son of John Trussell and Elizabeth Collins he died during the Civil War in Franklin ,TN. Toni , May 27, 2002 From other sources I find that Elisha died in Griffin, Ga of battle wounds, probably from the battle of Atlanta. He may have been buried in TN. Do you know? Any Help that you can give me on the Trussells would be great. And I would certainly be please to reciprocate if at all possible. Susan Aycock Notify Administrator about this message?
