Greg, I did see this record: http://wc.rootsweb.com/cgi-bin/igm.cgi?op=GET&db=debbiep84&id=I0205 The submitter's email address is shown, so she may be able to provide more information or provide a source for Lucy's maiden name as Collins. Otherwise, have you checked for death certificates of Charles and Lucy's children? They usually give the parents names and may give Lucy's maiden name. I've "backed into" maiden names plenty of times by going through a sibling's death certificate. Mississippi started keeping those records around 1912 I think. I'd guess that most of their sons served in the Confederate army. I see two records for a Tillman Smith in Company I, 8th MS Infantry and Company I of the 37th MS Infantry. Both companies were raised out of Lauderdale County. Check the service records for those sons that served. Sometimes they will indicate the county of birth...not always but it is worth a shot. The county in Alabama would be a good starting point for a marriage record search for Charles and Lucy. Also, Confederate pension applications (and the corresponding widow's pensions) may give a few clues. All of this is available at the Archives in Jackson and can also be ordered online. Lauderdale County records are extant to the mid-1840s if memory serves. A search of land/probate records may indicate an inheritance received by either Charles or Lucy when their parents died. Hope this helps, Scott Notify Administrator about this message?
