Zelma Ray Cruise Conerly, 78, died May 31, 2008, at the Mitchell Center in Tupelo. A native of Liberty Mississippi, she lived in Tupelo for the past 32 years. She was a 1951 graduate of Blue Mountain College. Her career as a teacher spanned 37 years across the state. She had taught in Durant, Crosby, Gloster and Centreville before ending her career after 14 years at Lawhon School in Tupelo. She was chosen 1985-86 Mississippi Teacher of the Year based on her outstanding work in the classroom and dedication to the teaching field. She was a long-time member of Harrisburg Baptist Church.
Services were in the Tupelo Chapel of Holland-Harris Funeral Directors with graveside services at the Roseland Cemetery in Gloster.
Survivors included her son Lloyd Russell Conerly (Jill) of Tupelo; daughter Zelma Katherine Randall (Storm) of Baton Rouge, La.; one brother, J.D. Cruise (Margie) of Liberty; three grandchildren; one great-grandchild.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Lloyd Micajah Cruise and Velma Williams Cruise; husband W.R. (Bubber) Conerly; son, Wallace Carl Conerly; and a sister, Evelyn Cruise.
