Frances Marie Studdard Mallard, 81, died Monday, June 2, 2008, at her daughter’s home in Belden after a brief illness. She was born May 30, 1927, in Palmetto to Calvin and Kathleen Roebuck Studdard. A lifelong Lee Countian, she graduated from East Tupelo High School and lived most of her adult life on Palmetto Road in Verona. She was an active member of the Verona United Methodist Church for 56 years and a member of the Senior Adult Sunday School Class. For more than 30 years she was a well-known and respected saleslady for Mooney’s Dress Shop and Spight’s on Broadway. She loved all animals, especially dogs. She was known for her perfect yard, which was named "Yard of the Month" numerous times. She was known for her community pride and for her stalwart compassion in putting others above self.
Services were at the Verona United Methodist Church with burial in Lee Memorial Park. Holland-Harris Funeral Directors Tupelo Chapel was in charge of the arrangements.
Survivors included two daughters, Betty M. Harris (Luther “Butch” Harris III) of Plantersville and Joan M. Ball of Belden; one grandson, Luther "Chip" Harris IV (Meredith) of Memphis; her brothers-in-law, Donald Mallard (Julia) of Pontotoc and Edward Pickens (Helen) of Chesepeake Bay, Md.; several cousins.
She was preceded in death by her husband, H.L. "Fritz" Mallard, on March 17, 2004; and her parents.
