Captain James Marvin Mitchell (Retired), 90, died June 28, 2008, at Gregory Green House At Traceway. A Sherman native, he was born on Feb. 25, 1918, to James Perry and Evaliner McCraw Mitchell. A lifelong soldier and Army officer, his career began in February 1941 at Camp Shelby, and he served the nation until his medical retirement in July 1967. He was a decorated World War II veteran wounded on the plains of France in 1944, a veteran of the Korean War serving as a Prisoner-of-War Camp Commander in 1953 and a veteran of the Cold War until his medical retirement as a totally disabled veteran. His many awards and decorations over a distinguished career include the Bronze Star, the Purple Heart, and the Combat Infantryman’s Badge. While in retirement he maintained active membership in the VFW, the Military Officer’s Association, and the Disabled American Veteran’s Association. He was an active member of the First Baptist Church, Panama City, Fla., from 1963 until his return to Mississippi in 2002 and was a member of Calvary Baptist Church until his death.

Graveside Services were at Sherman Cemetery with burial in Sherman Cemetery with full Military Honors. W. E. Pegues Funeral Directors was in charge of the arrangements.

Survivors included his wife of 66 years, Mary Evelyn Scruggs Mitchell of Tupelo; one twin daughter, Lucy Evelyn Mitchell Privett (Roane) of Oxford; one twin son, Brig. Gen. (Ret.) James Edwin Mitchell (Donna) of Tupelo; five grandchildren; 12 great grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents; one sister, Lavaida Randle and three brothers, Raymond, Tyson and Guy.
