From the following link, Eli was a Justice of the Peace in Columbus in 1840:

From this link, there was an E. Abbott in the state house in 1848 from Lowndes County:

From this link, Eli Abbott was a representative from Chickasaw County in 1854:

From the 1860 slave schedule, Eli had 157 slaves so I would imagine that someone that wealthy was active in politics. Looking at the Mississippi Archives online catalog, the Journal of the Mississippi House of Representatives is available on microfilm and microfiche for that time period. He would likely appear in it if he voted on any policies or attended sessions.
