Railroad in Madison Co, MS

I am researching Arthur George (A.G.) Wright, my gg-grandfather, who we believe to have been a carpenter with a construction crew for a railroad. Although from Georgia, he appears on GA, AL, and MS census records showing he moved around a lot. He appears on Madison County's 1860 census surrounded by other carpenters, cabinetmakers, machinists, etc. When I researched him in Jefferson Co, AL's 1888-1890 city directory, someone wrote back he was "boarding where railroad workers lived..." I wonder if anyone can tell me anything about a railroad that went through Madison during the 1860 timeframe as to whether it was being constructed, its name, etc. Thank you!
