Dorothy, I believe I answered a recent posting of yours on the Copiah Co., MS forum but here it is again.

It was Isham RUSSELL, Jr. who married Elizabeth GILLESPIE. The evidences for this begin with Alexander GILLESPIE dying at the home of Mrs. Elizabeth RUSSELL on 16 Nov 1839. Isham, Jr. had died in Copiah Co., MS in 1835 and Elizabeth was a widow in 1839. By a nun-cupative (verbal) will, given on 12 Nov 1839, Alexander GILLESPIE left his assets to Elizabeth. Elizabeth's eldest son, Green Woodward RUSSELL, was a witness to the oral will along with Mary MOORE. Alexander GILLESPIE's assets, as stated in court on 16 Mar 1840, was "That he wished Mrs Russell to have the money of his, which was then in the hands of Mr Aaron Miller, to purchase a horse to enable her to raise her children."

I have traced this Alexander GILLESPIE from Copiah Co., MS backward to Washington Par., LA [1820 census as Elick Gilaspy], to arrival in St. Tammany Par., LA in Aug 1812 [testimony before Land Commission in 1813], to Jackson Co., GA [first appeared in court records 13 Sep 1796 and sold land on 6 Nov 1811], to Greene Co., GA [1789 tax roll & 1792 deed], to Wilkes Co., GA [1790 land patent], to Washington Co., GA [residence on 5 Sep 1785 when requesting a Headright Grant of 200acs.], to York Co., SC from Oct 1772 through Rev. War, to Carlisle, Cumberland Co., PA and finally to indenture on 16 May 1772 in Philadelphia to John KINKAID of Carlisle.

Due to the great difference in age between Alexander [b. 1743] and Elizabeth [b. 1790-1800], I think it more likely that she is his granddaughter than daughter. I believe he lost a son back in Jackson Co., GA and assumed custody of at least three children, Elizabeth, William [who married Martha (Patsy) RITTER ca1821 and died in Copiah Co. in 1829] and Mary (Polly) who married John ADAMS in St. Tammany Par., LA in 1816.

I am less knowledgable about the Russells but there is much history on them in Tennessee and earlier.
