Hi, In March 2002 I visited the school. It was then Columbia Training School (now, too, probably), but had several names over the years prior to that. It is on Hwy. 45, Columbia-Purvis Rd. The people there were willing to show me around the place, show me some old photos with the land, buildings, and what went on back then. With a local judge's signature, I was allowed to copy down the card info. on my aunts and uncles. Their mom had died and their dad, my grandpa, was unable to care for all of them. He placed them at the Ms. Industrial & Training School for a while. Though this is now like a juvenile dentention center, at that time it was for orphans or others kids who needed a home. I was told the only requirement to leave your kids was to say take them. All children worked on the farm tending cattle, hogs, chickens, etc. They grew, picked and preserved butter beans and corn. It was self sufficient. They even supplied others around the state with their products. The girls made the clothing, washed, cooked, etc. Some of the same buildings still stand. There is a large lake. My aunts and uncles went in in 1918/19 and came out 1921/23. They were from Marion County, MS.
