By the 1840's the major Indian tribes were the Choctaw and the Chickasaw. The smaller tribes had either died out or had been assimilated with the Choctaws & Chickasaws. Many people did not want to be identified as Indian out of fear that they would be moved to Oklahoma, so they might not list that on the census records.


The Mississippi Band of Choctaw Indians is a recognized Indian tribe. Their reservation is located in Neshoba County, MS. They now have their own post office, Choctaw, MS. They have the Golden Moon and Silver Star Casinos, Dancing Rabbit Golf course and other attractions.

The Mississippi Department of Archives and History has records concerning Native Americans.
