started this post a few years ago, and thought I would try again. The following is what we have found so far: Jenkins Presley - York SC to Marshall MS Posted by: Delbert Bearden (ID *****7199) Date: March 10, 2005 at 17:54:36 of 1250 I am looking for the parents of Thomas A Presley b 1822 in South Carolina. Through the process of elimination and the multiple uses of the middle name Jenkins, a good possibility is Jenkins Presley who lived in York SC at the time of Thomas' birth. As stated above, Thomas A Presley was born in South Carolina around 1822. Here is how we think this might be a link. Jenkins Presley, was located in York County, South Carolina in 1830. At that time, he had 1 male between 5 and 10 yrs, 1 male under 5, 1 female between 20 and 30 (Rachael Brown, wife), 2 females between 10 and 15, and 2 females under 5. Thomas A Presley would have been about 8 in 1830. In 1840 Jenkins Presley moved his family to Marshall County, Mississippi. At this time, he had 1 male between 15 and 20 yrs, 1 male between 10 and 15, 1 male between 5 and 10, 1 female between 30 and 40 (Rachael), 2 females between 15 and 20, 1 female between 10 and 15, 1 female between 5 and 10, and 1 female under 5. Again, Thomas A Presley would have been about 18 years in 1840. There is a record of Jenkins Presley in 1841 and 1843 in Marshall County Mississippi. These may be voter registrations. There is no other record for Jenkins Presley after that. I have found that he died about 1843. The 1850 census is the first census that records the children. I found Rachael Presley living with 3 children, Jane 21, Alexander 16, Margaret 12. There is also a man named William Henderson 20, living with them. These children match those in the previous census, and looks like 5 of the children have moved on. Thomas A Presley would have been about 28 in 1850. I could not find Thomas A Presley at all in the 1850 census. According to the record that Calvin sent me, Thomas A Presley married in Tarrant TX in 1854. Does anyone out there know any of the childrens' names of Jenkins and Rachael Presley? Any help will be greatfully received. Delbert...I think I might know of 2 other children belonging to Jenkins and Rachael Presley...this is not absolute however. Rachael and daughters Jane and Margaret were in Tippah Co MS in 1860 census. According to Mt. Zion Cumberland Presbyterian church minutes, a June(Jane) and Margaret Presley joined the church on Oct 8 1854 and a John B Presley joined Sept. 13 1856....A J B Presley sold 105 acres in Feb of 1854 in Tippah Co to a Rachel Presley-SE-1/4..Sec 8..TWP-3 R-3-E...A John B Presley married my Gr-Grandmother's sister, Lucinda Arabella Graham(these Grahams belonged to Mt Zion also)..In 1860 John B-28-SC..Arabella-22-MS..Wm G-5-MS..Ezekiel B-2-MS are listed in the Marshall Co MS census..twp 4, Range 2, Holly Springs PO...they do have another child Sarah Frances born about 1861-MS...son Ezekiel's full name is James Ezekiel Brown Presley...Arabella has remarried by Dec of 1865, so John assumed to be deceased as well as the son Wm G...I think reasonably this John could be a son of Jenkins and Rachel or close kin at least....Another possible child could be Adeline Presley...in Marshall Co MS marriage records-1836-1865 a William P Henderson marries Adeline Presley..no date given...in the household of a James and Rebecca Henderson in 1850 Marshall Co MS census, there is listed a William P-20-AL and a Adaline Henderson-19-SC..I know that W P and Adeline are listed in 1860 Marshall co census then move on to Tippah co, but I don't have those census at hand....they have a Dau named Margaret Henderson who married my Gr Grandmother's brother Joseph McLawrence Graham..I know that Wp and Adeline havea dau named Rachel...thought this might be of some help...I'll be happy to answer any questions you might have or help in any way...Rita Antle Rita – Thanks for the post. I think that Adeline is a good match to one of the daughters that I don’t have the name for, but match the age bracket, and being married before the 1850 census would make sense on why she wasn’t listed in the family with Rachel, Jane, Alexander, and Margaret. I do have a question about John B though. Did you mean “A John B” or A “John B”? If it were “A John B” then it could be the same as Alexander. If it is “John B”, I’m not sure I can make a link. I spent a week in South Carolina last summer in Chester and York counties trying to find the older children’s names and was able to find 2 names in York County Historical Center. I found “James C” 1828, and “Rachel Jane” 1829 from information someone got from christenings at the local ME church. The James seems to match the son you listed for John, so a further look needs to be made to find a link. Rachel Jane makes sense because it was common to name daughters after the mother, but use a middle name to keep the confusion out of the daily lives. With this information, it looks like we only need the names of the oldest 2 daughters, and confirm the name of the oldest son of Jenkins and Rachel Presley. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Chat | Daily Search | My GenForum | Community Standards | Terms of Service Jump to Forum Home: Surnames: Presley Family Genealogy Forum Re: Jenkins Presley - York SC to Marshall MS Posted by: Rita Antle (ID *****0721) Date: January 08, 2006 at 16:56:07 In Reply to: Re: Jenkins Presley - York SC to Marshall MS by Delbert Bearden of 1250 Hi Delbert...It is "John B' Presley..and his son was John Ezekiel Brown Presley...I don't know why I said James..sorry..It would be great to be able to link John B to Jenkins and Rachel as well as Adelne Presley Henderson. I had been aware of the Jenkins in the 1840 Marshall Co Ms census and had at some time seen where a Jenkins had married a Rachel Brown. Finding Rachel in 1850 Marshall, then on into Tippah, and seeing the 2 girls names and John B's name in the church minutes, I pretty much convinced myself that the "B" in John's name stood for "Brown"...the son I figured was named after John and Arabella's Father was Ezekiel....and finding the deed from J B to Rachel really put me to thinking. I wondered where in the world he was in 1850. The only age we have to go on is the 1860 census where he is listed as 28-SC...I thought maybe he had died in the war, but have not come up with anything yet. It has been some time since I have tried looking for anything on him, but your post interested me. I had not realized that Jenkins was listed in the 1841 Tippah State census until today. We have a book at the Library which has this census(typed out)...It only gives his name as head but does tell you how many males and females are in the household and those living around him..might be some clue in the neighbors and to see if all the 8 children are still there....There is a James C Pressley who is listed as 18-SC and lives in the household of a John James Gray-22-SC and S.A.F.Gray(F-22-SC), but that age doesn't match what you found though.....I'll go to the library and check the 41 census out and do some more looking.....Thanks for replying...Rita....
